Sports

Boston has a varied but energetic sporting scene. The city is home to several major teams in a range of sports and is a big player in the national leagues. Not only is the city home to the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and New England Patriots, there are a whole range of other sports represented here.

Baseball

The Boston Red Stockings were the first baseball team to play in the National Association. They evolved from the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1871 and have played baseball competitively every single year since.

The BoSox, or Boston Red Sox play in Major League Baseball and account well for themselves every year. They have a fanatical following and the city is a very lively place after every win.

Football

Boston is also attributed with being the place where American Football was first played. The game is said to have evolved from a hybrid of soccer and rugby and was first called “the Boston game.”

Modern football is represented by the New England Patriots who play at the Gillette Stadium.

Basketball

Our professional basketball team is the Boston Celtics, named in honor our Irish roots. They play at TD Garden and were a founding member of the Basketball Association of America. Now they play in the NBA and so far have accounted well. They have won the World Championship more times than any other team in the NBA.

Ice Hockey

The TD Garden also plays host to Boston’s ice hockey team, the Boston Bruins. The Bruins play in the NHL and were another local team to help found a national league. So far, they have won six Stanley Cups, most recently in 2011.

Other Sports

A range of other sports are well represented in Boston, including soccer, rugby tennis and sailing.

New England Revolution are our soccer team, they play at the Gillette Stadium alongside the Patriots.

Boston Cannons are one of our lacrosse teams who play Major League Lacrosse. They play at Harvard.

Boston Blazers are another lacrosse team. They play in the National Lacrosse League at TD Garden.

Boston Breakers are the city’s women’s soccer team who play in the Women’s Professional Soccer League and play at Harvard.

Boston is also home to the oldest tennis club in the America’s, the Longwood Cricket Club. Despite the name, they don’t play cricket.

Boston has hundreds of other semi-professional and amateur teams that make the sports scene an exciting and varied one. If sports is your passion, you won’t get bored here!
